Will the Economy Affect Writers and Blogs?
The worldwide slowdown in nearly all sectors appears to be affecting nearly all businesses, except those that generate their revenue off of people who “need” their services - hospitals, many grocery stores, etc.
2009 doesn’t appear to be a good year for the businesses previously mentioned, as more people will be laid off, as consumer spending continues to decline, although there may be some bright spots in the world as people find better ways to make money - one that you should consider is blogging.
Blogging is something that you can do in your free time, away from “the rush” of daily life and on your own time. Most bloggers can successfully blog in under an hour each day, creating a new post and moderating comments. Spend more time, and you’ll see even better results.
When larger companies look for the best ways to advertise, they (typically) seek out a few main, central locations to place their advertising. However, as they focus more on saving money, they will likely branch out to more blogs that offer cheaper, more affordable advertising. This way, they’ll continue to grow their own business (even though there will still be a general slow-down).
For some freelance writers (connected to blogs), the main owner of the blog may cut rates, but you will still have a job (unless you a part of management, etc.), but you will still have hundreds of other opportunities waiting at your door. You can, in many cases, set your own rates, and still make a good stream of additional (or main) revenue.
All in all, as long as you are prepared for what may come, you won’t have to make any drastic changes. If not, you will have to make some reconsiderations about how you want to live your life and continue making money online.
