How to Select the Perfect Domain

Published by blogtips under Domains Edit This

Before you even start writing for a new site (it may be your first time blogging, after all), you want to choose a domain that is meaningful and relevant to what you are planning to write about.  There are a few key steps to choosing one that others will remembercontains relevant keywords, and is timeless.

First of all, create a list of words that relate to, or are similes to the main topic/focus of your blog.  From this list, analyze any possible combinations with other words, such as “tips,” numbers, short verbs, etc. that help distinguish your domain, and eventually domain, from every other one out there.

Some Additional Ideas:

— Don’t use too many words in your URL or people won’t be able to remember it.

— Domains should contain at least one to three words, ideally, consisting of the selected keywords that you have chosen.

— Avoid numbers and words referring to your name, unless you are using them for your personal domain.

— Focus around the subject of your blog, but not in the main niche.  As an example, if you write about “Internet advice,” you might want to think of something more creative than that main topic, but not so specific, such as “Internet tips for people using x brand of cable.”  It may appear ridiculous, but it does happen.

After you have done the first step, go to a site or your chosen blog hoster (today.com is an example) and place these ideas into the “domain” area to see if it is available.  Don’t be discouraged if it has already been taken.  Most “general’ words were taken within a short period that they first became available, so there isn’t anything you can do about this.

Once you have discovered one that suits your needs and is available, you can register it.
